Volunteers performed much needed, labor intensive brush cutting. The majority of the work was done by hand. These land stewards combed through the grassland removing any woody invasives by hand. It was very tedious work, especially considering the near constant sound of highway traffic going past. Thankfully our volunteers seemed unfazed by the noise, and advanced a good distance along the roadside prairie. In fact, after having eliminated a good majority of the little pockets of invasive brush and saplings, they then focussed on a massive thicket of brush! Had not the allotted time for this workday run out, they would have most likely cut down the entire patch!
We are forever grateful for the service of our volunteers! Each of them has performed incredible service in the name of ecological health. Spending their free time laboring alongside a busy highway, when they could have been doing anything else is to be commended.
