Volunteers helped push back more of the smothering brush that has been encroaching onto the Hillside Prairie. This unique, micro remnant of the original ancient Sauk Prairie may have been grazed at some point, but it was never plowed. Over the years a small variety of rare plants have been noted as growing in this location.
In a very short span of time these fine folks hand cut many bundles of woody growth. Working along the northeastern edge of the section, they cleared more of the former grassland, and pushed up the steep slope a bit. Without the use of prescribed fire, which is currently banned on the DNR owned Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area due to an errant burn held in another section of the former BAAP lands, the work of these volunteer land stewards is essential.
Here’s to another great season of citizen conservation efforts!
