June 14th, 2025,
This is considered by many to be the last, tiny remnant of the ancient Sauk Prairie. Roughly 14,000 acres of native grassland on a unique glacial outwash plain. Our volunteers have been doing their best at removing invasive vegetation. Prescribed fire has been safely conducted on this specific, uncontaminated section of the former BAAP lands.
The western edge of the remnant is especially in dire need of a controlled burn. Currently poison ivy, wild parsnip, and assorted thorny brush combine with entangling vines that are trying to smother everything around them. It makes for a hazard to our volunteers, and makes us appreciate their efforts even more.
We're hoping to find a thoughtful, well planned solution. We can only try. We feel it's vital to preserve this ancient Sauk Prairie hillside remnant.
